Why Buy From a Home-Based FFL
People hear "home-based FFL" and picture a guy selling guns out of his garage next to a lawn mower and a stack of old tires. I get it. I'd be skeptical too if I didn't know what I know.
So let me clear the air. A home-based FFL holds the exact same federal license as the shop on the highway with the neon "GUNS" sign. Same ATF inspections. Same bound book. Same 4473 forms. Same NICS background checks. Same legal obligations. The difference is that I don't have a storefront, which means I don't have the overhead — and that means better pricing for you.
The Math Nobody Talks About
Running a retail gun shop is expensive. And every dollar of that overhead gets passed to you, the buyer.
— before utilities, insurance, employees, displays, security systems, and all the rest. That shop needs to mark up every firearm enough to cover those costs. There's no other way to keep the lights on.
I don't have that problem. My overhead is my FFL license, my safe, my insurance, and my internet connection. When I buy a Christensen Ridgeline from a distributor, I can sell it to you closer to what I paid for it because I'm not feeding a building.
Real numbers: That difference isn't because I'm cutting corners — it's because I don't have a landlord.
The Service Difference
Walk into a big box store on a Saturday afternoon. There's a line. The guy behind the counter is handling three customers at once, answering a phone, and trying to find a price tag that fell off. He might be great at his job — but he doesn't have time for you.
When you come to me, you're the only customer I'm talking to. By appointment means I've blocked out time specifically for you. I'm not rushing. I'm not distracted. If you want to spend 45 minutes talking about what optic to put on that new rifle, we'll spend 45 minutes. If you want to be in and out in 10 minutes, we can do that too.
I tell every customer the same thing: you get my undivided attention, for as long as it takes to make sure you leave happy.
I don't say that because it sounds good on a website. I say it because my daughter has watched me live it for ten years. If you can't stand behind your word, what are you teaching your kids?
But How Do I Know It's Legitimate?
Fair question. Here's how:
- The ATF knows exactly where I am. Every FFL is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. My license is on file, my address is on file, and I'm subject to the same compliance inspections as any retailer. If I wasn't doing it right, I wouldn't have a license.
- Every firearm is logged. The ATF requires every FFL to maintain an Acquisition and Disposition (A&D) book — a permanent record of every firearm that enters and leaves the licensee's possession. Mine is meticulous because the consequences of sloppy record-keeping are severe. This isn't a hobby. This is my livelihood and my name.
- I've been doing this for over a decade. I went to my first gun show when I was eight years old. I joined the Army and my love for firearms grew from there. I've been in this industry for more than ten years. I'm not going anywhere.
Who Uses Home-Based FFLs
More people than you'd think. These aren't fringe operators. They're your neighbor who happens to know firearms like a mechanic knows engines.
A lot of my customers found me through word of mouth. One guy tells his buddy at church. That buddy tells his hunting partner. The hunting partner tells his brother-in-law. Before you know it, I've met half the guys at the Saturday morning men's breakfast and they all know where to get a fair deal on a rifle without driving an hour to a shop that'll charge them double my transfer fee.
That's how this works. No advertising budget needed. Just honest dealing and the good Lord keeping the phone ringing.
The Bottom Line
A home-based FFL isn't a lesser option. For a lot of buyers, it's the better option. Lower prices. Personal service. No pressure. No salespeople working on commission. Just a veteran who loves firearms, knows the business, and doesn't believe in wasting people's time or money.
If that sounds like what you've been looking for, you know where to find me.
